Privacy Policy
Draft — pending review. This page is a working draft and has not yet been reviewed or approved by LA County counsel. It is provided for transparency and may change before launch. It is not a final or binding legal statement.
This policy explains what personal information the LA County Parks & Recreation volunteer management system collects when you apply to volunteer or use the volunteer portal, how that information is used, and the choices available to you. It applies to this website and the volunteer application and portal it provides.
Information we collect
We collect information you provide directly when you apply to volunteer or manage your volunteer profile, and a limited amount of technical information needed to operate the service securely.
- Contact and identity details you submit, such as your name, date of birth, email address, phone number, and mailing area.
- Application details, including your facility preferences, availability, interests, prior volunteer service, and emergency contact.
- Consents and acknowledgements you provide, such as background-check authorization and any photography consent.
- For applicants who are minors, parent or guardian contact details provided with the application.
- Records generated as you participate, such as assignments, scheduled appointments, logged volunteer hours, and messages exchanged with staff.
- Basic technical and security information, such as log data needed to keep the service available and protect against abuse.
How we use your information
We use the information to run the county volunteer program and to communicate with you about your involvement.
- To review and process your volunteer application and determine eligibility.
- To coordinate background screening and any required training or onboarding.
- To match you with facilities and assignments and to schedule appointments.
- To track volunteer hours and recognize service milestones.
- To contact you about your application, assignments, and program updates.
- To operate, secure, and improve the service and to meet legal or recordkeeping obligations.
How we share information
Volunteer information is used by authorized LA County Parks & Recreation staff to administer the program. We may share information with service providers that help us operate the platform (for example, background-check or identity-verification partners) and where required by law. We do not sell your personal information.
How long we keep information
We retain volunteer records for as long as needed to administer the program and to satisfy applicable county recordkeeping and legal requirements, after which information is deleted or de-identified. The county will confirm specific retention periods as part of finalizing this policy.
Your choices and rights
You may request access to or correction of the information in your volunteer profile, and you may ask questions about how your information is handled. To make a request, contact us using the details below. Some information may need to be retained to meet legal obligations.
Children's information
Where an applicant is a minor, the application requires a parent or guardian to be identified, and we handle that information in support of the volunteer relationship and as required by law.
